Do I need Therapy?
People come to therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes people need support to deal with unexpected changes in their lives, for example illness, the death of a loved one, becoming a parent, divorce, homesickness, adjusting to a new environment, starting a new career. Others have long standing psychological issues which they feel they now have the courage to address. Therapy can provide a supportive and safe place to explore the connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. It can also offer practical alternatives to cope with the stresses of life. A person who is in therapy can be a healthier model for their family, children, friends and co workers, and avoid repeating the dysfunctional patterns that are passed on from generation to generation.
What is Therapy like?
Therapy can be a different experience for every individual. Depending on your needs, therapy can be short-term for a specific concern or longer-term, to deal with more difficult and deep rooted issues. In general, you will be meeting with a therapist initially once a week. You will talk about your responses to what is going on in your life, and together we will establish goals as well as determine the steps you need to take to reach those goals. The therapist will motivate you, help you recognize patterns that interfere with your well being, and work with you to develop new skills to move toward a more fulfilling life. All interactions you have with the therapist are strictly confidential.

Is Therapy better than Medication?
It is well known that mental and emotional problems cannot be solved by medication alone. Sometimes therapy is enough to heal the the emotional pain. Other times in addition to therapy people take medication. I work closely with some of the best psychiatrists in the Washington area to make sure that you get the treatment that is most beneficial for you.
